Contracting/Corporate/Community/School&
Other Volunteer Opportunities at St. Peters Orphanage/Village
There are many volunteer opportunities for schools, business,
community organizations and individuals at St. Peters
Orphanage/Village. The residence is set on 9 acres and
houses more than 16 young men so we can always use landscaping
assistance and contracting type maintenance/upgrades in
the plumbing, painting, electrical, heating/cooling, and
carpentry areas. Community organizations/groups and schools
can volunteer time with grounds clean up, smaller scale
on-site projects, fund raising for specific needs related
to the residents (e.g., camping/sporting equipment, clothing
or furniture, etc.). Corporate sponsorship is another
way local, state, and national/international business
can improve both the quality of life for these young men
and the facility they live in.
St.
Peter's Volunteer Program
St. Peters Village acknowledges the need for our
residents to receive individual attention, and positive
role models. It is for this reason that we have implemented
a Volunteer Program designed to address these needs.
Below please find the definition and qualifications
for this program. St. Peters Volunteer Program
meets the specifications of the State Manual of Requirements,
as stated in 10:127-5.5.
Tutor
An
individual who comes to St. Peters during study
hour (usually one day each week) and assists an assigned
resident with his homework and basic reading, mathematics
and study skills. Tutors may only meet with residents
on site, and while under staff supervision.
Before
interacting with any resident, all tutors must first
complete a brief application, which requests basic personal
information, a list of any skills the volunteer will
bring to our program, and three personal references.
In addition, tutors must sign a disclosure form, a Promise
of Confidentiality form, and an authorization
for St. Peters to obtain a Criminal History Record
File.
All
volunteers must attend an orientation-training seminar,
which is run by St. Peters Mental Health Clinician.
For all volunteers, the training seminar will include;
an introduction to the facility, population served,
brief description of general diagnoses, medications and
their side effects, behaviors and appropriate responses.
Additional training areas will be covered as requested
or deemed necessary.
Upon
completion of the application, disclosure form, training
seminar, reference check, as well as receipt of a
satisfactory Criminal History Background Check, the
tutor will be assigned to work with a specific resident.
